We, humans, tend to categorize our outlooks, “adjectify” them for simplicity and to know what to wear and when. We want to look classy at times, perhaps formal in a meeting, but classy and formal at a friend’s wedding. Maybe professional for an interview, but bold and professional for a headshot. Our desire to look a certain way drives the fashion industry, and the think-tanks want to come up with new adjectives, and new categories all the time.
Today, let’s discuss bowties. Is there something to discuss? Well, we all know what bowties are, we have a million Youtube tutorials on wearing bowties, and none of us is really interested in the history. We are interested in how do bowties look, and what adjectives to use with them — where to categorize them on the fashion spectrum of 2022.
Asking these questions is easy, answering them is philosophically difficult — as variables like geographical region, your peers, and what the industry top one percent are wearing. That’s all hard to keep track of, that’s why we all like it when something old… is simply reinvented.
